Schroth-Based Physical Therapy
The Schroth method of scoliosis exercise therapy is a 3D conservative treatment approach. It has been in the forefront of non-surgical care for scoliosis in Europe since 1927. The treatment is based on sensory-motor and kinesthetic principles. The treatment is specific to each individuals curvature and uses corrective breathing techniques, and exercises to lengthen the trunk, de-rotate, and correct the asymmetry. It can be used to treat scoliosis patients of all ages and in all stages of treatment. Its goals are to limit progression of the abnormal spinal curvature, and in the best case scenario, reverse the curve.
The Schroth-based Method Emphasizes:
*Spinal Elongation
*Postural corrections and improved cosmesis
*Increased vital capacity, breathing into spinal concavities
*Balancing musculature
*Improved body mechanics and awareness; lifelong changes
*Reduced pain
*Avoid or prolong scoliosis surgery
The therapy, tailored to each patient’s curves and individual need, focuses on halting curve progression, reducing pain, and improving posture, strength and lung function. The exercises include stretching, strengthening and breathing techniques that counteract the rotation of spinal curvatures. Patients continue to exercise at home and incorporate postural corrections into their daily lives.
SCHROTH TREATMENT APPROACH
Minimum of 20 hours consisting of One on One individualized sessions
MANAGEABLE HOME PROGRAM
• It is recommended that you exercise 5 days a week for approximately 30 minutes a day. Regular repetition of the exercises for scoliosis and kyphosis helps you "reprogram" your posture away from your specific scoliotic posture to a new more balanced one.
REFRESHER SESSIONS
• Opportunities for refresher sessions exist and will be arranged as needed
